Split bills by income calculator

Earn different amounts? Splitting shared bills by income means you each pay the same share of what you earn. Enter both incomes and your shared bills to see what's fair, side by side with 50/50.

Your incomes

Use take-home pay or gross pay, as long as you use the same for both.

Track who paid what, all month

The Couples' Money Tracker gives each category its own split rule (by income, 50/50 or custom), logs shared spending from either phone and tells you in one sentence who owes whom. Google Sheets and Excel.

How splitting by income works

Add your two incomes together, then work out each person's share of the total. If Alex earns $6,500 and Sam earns $4,000, Alex earns about 62% of the household's $10,500 and Sam about 38%. Each shared bill is then split 62/38. Both of you hand over the same percentage of your pay, so the lower earner isn't squeezed.

50/50, by income, or a mix?

  • 50/50 is simple and feels even when your incomes are close.
  • By income keeps things fair when one of you earns noticeably more.
  • A mix is common: rent and bills by income, and fun money or groceries 50/50. Some couples pool everything instead.

There's no right answer. The best split is the one you've talked about and both feel good about. Revisit it when an income changes, for example a new job, parental leave or a move to part-time.

Using a joint account

If you pay shared bills from a joint account, the "pays" amounts above are what each of you would transfer in each month. Many couples add a little extra as a buffer for bills that vary.
